AMAP Releases Three New Summaries for Policymakers on Critical Arctic Issues

May 12, 2025

The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) has today released three new Summaries for Policymakers addressing urgent and interlinked environmental issues in the Arctic. These include:

Arctic Climate Change Update 2024: Key Trends and Impacts, which details how the Arctic is warming three times faster than the global average, with far-reaching consequences for ecosystems, global sea-level rise and Indigenous Peoples.

Radioactivity in the Arctic, which shows that although levels of human-made radioactivity are declining, climate change is altering the movement of radionuclides, underscoring the need for continued monitoring;

Effects of Plastic Pollution on Arctic Animals, which outlines the widespread but under-researched impacts of plastic litter on Arctic wildlife and ecosystems.

Each Summary for Policymakers is grounded in independent, peer-reviewed science, compiled by international teams of experts, and reviewed in collaboration with Arctic States and Permanent Participants. They offer up-to-date findings and clear policy and research recommendations to inform evidence-based decision-making in the region. Together, these reports reaffirm AMAP’s role in delivering authoritative scientific assessments that support coordinated responses to Arctic change.
